MEXICO CITY, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- An estimated investment of three billion U.S. dollars has been spent under the administration of Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera since 2012 to boost the capital's tourism potential, the city's Secretary of Tourism Miguel Torruco Marques announced Monday.

As a result, Marques said, Mexico City would count with 2,000 new hotel rooms by the end of 2015, bringing to 52,000 the total number of hotel rooms in the city.

He added that investors behind this saw Mexico City as a strong, new option for hotel and tourism infrastructure.

According to the Mexican Association of Travel Agencies (AMAV), 4- and 5-star hotels in Mexico City and across the country have raised their prices between 15 and 18 percent this year.

The secretary said the city has become more attractive for tourists, therefore increasing competition in the hotel sector.

He also hailed the successful "Toca Puertas" (Knock On Doors) program, which was carried out alongside the Mexican Tourism Board (CPTM).

"We visited 12 main cities that provide tourists and have succeeded in starting new direct flights with nine of them," he said, adding that an increased number of flights would link Mexico City to Toronto, Boston, San Antonio and Munich, among others.

He also noted that the CDMX Travel Program, which provides travellers with key information on the city upon arrival at Mexico City Airport's Terminal 2, will soon be expanded to cover Chinese, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Russian languages.
